"Miss Sedna? We·re almost there ."

"How far? Ka"

"We·re within visual range ." The helmsperson turned to the bridge engineer . "Open the blast curtain ."

The front windshield of the USS Feliчa opened up , revealing a space station looking like a dot straight forward .

"Whoa ," Tequila gasped lowly . "They·ve been busy ."

"Been here before ?" Matte asked .

"Five years ago , with Admiral Fridges here . The place was barely larger than a few city prefectures , and the grav ring there wasn·t even finished ."

The asteroid cluster consisted of ten asteroids , with decks and bridges of all sorts connecting them . There were two grav rings , a small one enclosed by most of the structure , and a massive one on the outer rim that looked as if entire towns were built around its circumference .

"The clocks don·t know anything , yet they·re all psychically entrained to the same database ," Raphtalia instructed the crew . "Accessing the central archive should only require getting them into an aroused gloaming state . If we hit their ecchi points , they·ll open up . If we make them do anything they wouldn·t ever do anyway , they·ll shut down ."

"Remember ," Sedna spoke through the synthetic telepathy relay . "We·ve got twenty-four hours . To tie up loose ends , to make amends ."

The trip had taken a little over a month by Electromagnetic Drive , the various mercenaries and renegades having had a bit of time to get to know each other . Antimatter Drives had been strictly outlawed thousands of years ago for their statistical probability of blowing up entire planets , and Warp Drive was still expensive .

"Ummm , Mister Gix?" Fizzing asked . "Are you gonna be okay in that Ka , are you sure you don·t want a space suit?"

Gix shrugged , in part to answer her question , in part to fit the standard-issue USCM green flak plate over his skeletal frame .

"Yeah but what if something goes wrong? What if you have to shoot something and it breaches the hull and you get sucked out into space? Ka"

"Then I die . In battle . Then I go to Heaven . That·s how it works , right ?"

Only Sedna grinned .

Gix took a hit off a meth pipe .

"No smoking in here , Marine ."

"Yes Maam ," he answered dryly , taking a long hit and exhaling through his nose .

"There·s definitely treasure here ," Sedna said , looking out the three-foot-thick glasteel windsheild . "I can feel it ."

Raphtalia looked at one of the monitors along the side wall , looking back towards Terra and Sol . The sun was barely a speck from this distance , bigger than the other stars in every direction yet much smaller than the view from Terra . Looking forward , she noticed that there weren·t any solar panels , yet bright blue lasers ran from site to site .

"Do you see a way in? Ka" TuLi asked .

"Nnno ," the helmsperson admitted .

"Looks like they haven·t bothered to build in landing docks in any of the outer structures ," Sedna analyzed .

Gix walked over to the Security Officer·s console . "Those the guns?" He asked .

"Yeah ," the Security Officer admitted .

Gix sat in his lap , took the handbars , flipped the safety , opened the firing caps , and held down . Bright lights flashed from the sides of the ship .

"What the fuck are you doing ?!" the Sec Officer shouted .

Tequila laughed . "So much for going in quietly ."

From the bridge , the guns were silent . In the vacuum , the guns were silent . He drew a neat rectangle along the side of one of the recycled hulls .

"Those the torpedoes ?" He asked .

The Security Officer , stunned , unused to any physical contact at all , said nothing .

Gix reached down and pushed a button on the dash console . A grey cylinder shot out from under the ship .

"Target at 800 miles ." The helmsperson reported dutifully . "600 miles . 400 . 200 . Contact ."

The explosion was as bright as it was silent . When the dust started to clear , there was a landing bay in the side of the space station .

"It·s time to Rock and Ride ."

"Nice shot ," Tequila mocked sarcastically . "How are you gonna board if you aren·t even wearing a space suit ?"

Gix pulled a baseball-sized metal sphere from a pouch on his belt , pushed a button on the side of it , and threw it at her . Tequila flinched , raising their hands over their head , waiting for a blow that didn·t come . The sphere stopped in mid-air . A field of blue hexagons materialized covering nearly half of the bridge .

"Now there·s a landing bay . Let·s go ."

"I·ve got to admit !!" Raphtalia shouted from behind cover , "i expected our entrance to be a little bit quieter !!"

Bullets ricocheted off of signposts and bored holes into the concrete behind them .

"GRENADE !!" Matte yelled .

There was an ear-splitting SHAK followed by high-pitched ringing . Sedna looked at the damage report in the bottom corner of her HUD , some scraped paint and rattled microphones tho nothing excessive . Her teammates were wearing , however , less than Power Armor .

"EVERYONE OKAY ?!" She yelled into her mic , not wanting to rely on synthetic telepathy in the middle of a firefight .

"Where the fuck did they get grenades ?!" Tequila bellowed . "I thought you said we were dealing with 20th Century street cops ?!"

"That was mine !!" Gix relayed with drole casuality .

"WHAAAT ?!" Fizzing screamed over the din .

"Backup , backup! I need some backup!" One of the officers shouted into his radio .

"Officer down!" Another yelled into hers , "I repeat , officer down!"

The clocks had no idea what they were fighting , or why . Sedna had bumped into a civilian while walking down the street and the civilian had called the cops . While the team was trying to swiftly walk away , a cruiser had come down the street and six cops got out . They had taken one look at the team of space marines and renegade scientists in various degrees of tactical dress and called in the entire police force .

Special Weapons And Tactics units came pouring out of the armored van that Gix had just detonated , the brains of its driver splattered across the pavement .

"I swear i killed that fucker already !!" Tequila swore .

"The station·s AI is probably printing more !!" Fizzing yelled back .

ffzew ssew tsew tsao , the bullets bounced harmlessly off of the neoneutronium plate comprising Sedna·s suit·s hull .

"I·ll draw their fire !!" Sedna shouted to her teammates , stepping out from behind cover .

"What the fuck is that ?!" One of the cops yelled .

Grav plates loosened themselves from her arm cannon and began rotating in the air in front of the muzzle , collecting a bright blue ball of plasma . When she fired at one of the bullet-riddled cars the cops had been hiding behind , it vaporized the steel , ignited the gas tank , and bored a hole into the pavement that exposed the subway below .

"That the way we gotta go ?!" Tequila shouted .

"Hai !!" TuLi shouted back , looking at the 3D holo-maps of the station on her wrist-mounted persocom . "3 o·clock , 50 yards until the next room !!"

The artificial sun was shining brightly in the simulated sky , only a few stories up from street level . Sedna thought to herself that the clocks probably never bothered to check if they hadn·t been given the impulse to do so .

Two of the cops , feeling all of the real force of their own emotions at being confronted by some sort of indestructible monster , broke formation and fled , ordering their comrades to do the same .

"Uhhh , miss Sedna ?!" Fizzing called out worriedly , looking at her scanner and then at the tops of the buildings just down the street . "They·re setting up snipers !!"

Sedna looked up , charged her cannon , then hesitated . "Can one of you get it Ka ?! Concrete is one thing sed at this angle i·d tear a hole in the station hull !!"

Matte pulled off two lucky shots with his pulse rifle on stun . Metal flechettes punctured their kevlar armor at mach three .

"Use stun !!" Gix shouted angrily .

"That was the stun !!" Matte responded , flashing Gix the broad side of his USCM C-10 MkVI Ghost Rifle , clearly designed to punch through steel plating .

"Move , move , move !!" Tequila screamed , waving their arm in a wide arc over their head in the direction of the hole in the ground .

"Still pleased with yourself for showing off without a space suit ?" Tequila teased Gix .

Gix took a hit from his meth pipe . "You wanna fight about about it ?"

The tunnel was dark . Flashlights flicked on one by one .

"Fssh , who brings a flashlight to a night vision party La" Fizzing teased with a cute snideness .

"Looks like a subway tunnel ," Matte elucidated . "Do you think it goes straight to the next chamber ?"

"Doesn·t look like it ," TuLi remarked , reading her map . "I·m not even sure if it·s possible to get an actual train running down here , the prefab is only a couple city blocks long ."

"Why do you think this place has so many of the same identical building ?" Matte asked the group .

"From what i understand ," Tequila sneered , "it has to do with folding time ."

Hydropwnic garden beds lined the walls of the subway tunnel , lit by spot lamps with heavy steel lids , as if the clocks were trying to preserve the mood lighting .

"Twelve yards ," TuLi relayed . The flashlights , some in infrared for those with genetic mods , some in the blue light spectrum , pointed forward , illuminating a curved steel hatch built into the stone wall . She used her hardlight array to remove a lockpicker from her belt , unscrewed a wall panel , and scanned the electronics . Another one of those crap Autodog-Catco knock-offs . Perfect . Pulling the schematics from her Pedia , she snipped a wire , clipped the alligator clamps onto the loose ends , and turned it on . It shorted out .

"That·s weird ," she remarked . "Usually those things come right off ."

"Here , let me try ," Fizzing offered .

"Wait ," Sedna suggested . "There·s no reason to believe the facility local wouldn·t have rewired the circuits . Let·s not go blowing all of our equipment after the first firefight ."

"Speaking of blowing things ," Tequila said with a grin , "who·s got the gum ?"

Raphtalia grinned and fished a brick of C-4 from her tac vest .

"The C-4 , not the Semtex , if you please ," Sedna advised . "If we can get through this thing with less than the maximal amount of destruction that would be great ."

"target Hco Raphtalia Yeah , this isn·t Phloston Paradise ." Fizzing jabbed .

"Phloston what ?" Tequila pipped up .

"Didn·t you ever study Ancient Movies and Music in Multi? Ka"

"I didn·t go to Multi ."

Plastique . Blast caps . Wire . There was a loud pop and a cloud of smoke .

"Purrrfect ," Sedna purred .

"My Master taught me that ," Raphtalia stated proudly .

"You don·t have to call him your master right now , you know ," Matte encouraged her .

She gave him a waning smile .

The access tube was spotless , in bright clean plastic and steel , a stark contrast to the dimly-lit , somehow soot-stained tunnel .

"Do you think the developers added the soot when they assembled it ," Fizzing wondered openly , "or do you think it came with the place? Ka"

"Move along , dorks ." Sedna ordered .

-+-+-+-+-

"Hel-lo ." Tequila enthused .

"Yeow ." Matte concurred . "That·s a lot of damage ."

"Tch ." TuLi agreed . "Such a nice car , too ."

The team had come through the clean white access tunnel and into a moderately-lit garage containing an ancient prewar vehicle . It was dark red , the front of it was caved in , and there was a hole in the windsheild .

"What do you think it·s for? Ka" Fizzing asked .

"Who knows ," Sedna chipped in curtly . "Search it for any valuables and let·s move on ."

There was nothing of interest in the oddly displaced vehicle , and no indication of why a gasoline engine car would be in a fabricated garage in a space station hidden in the system·s asteroid belt . It could have been passed off as a nondescript , low-key mystery , had the team not stepped through the door on the opposite side into an identical garage with an identical car , every single fold and shatter meticulously identical to the first . They came across one , two , six , twelve , twenty-four of them , until the dots on their holo-maps identified that they were actually curving around the outer ring of the space station .

"Do you think it goes all the way around? Ka" Fizzing asked aloud .

"Who knows ," Sedna reiterated . "Keep your eyes peeled for a door , there·s got to be a way out of here ."

-+-+-+-+-

"Hey cutie . What·s a guy like you doing in a place like this ?"

"Hi . Can i buy you a drink ?"

"Nice boots . Wanna fuck ?"

It was nighttime , and the crew was in a bar in another identical city block , just like the one they had just had the firefight in and without a single bullet casing or any holes in the ground at all . The prefab was at a 90° angle to the previous one along the outer grav ring .

Sedna watched her arm holo-map , observing the red dots and green triangles amongst the translucent glowing blue floor plan . She listened to their suit mics as they sought suitible hosts to tap .

She looked out of the fourth-floor office window across the street . Everything inside the office building that could be seen from the street had been fully fleshed out . Everything that was behind-the-scenes was warehouse-grade , the prefab wall bisecting the lower concourse lengthwise . Matte was perched on top of the building across the street , C-10 MkVI Ghost Rifle in hand .

"Tch ." TuLi reported . "Not that one ."

"Okay ," Raphtalia said to her target . "No problem . Catch ya later ."

"Got one ." Tequila reported quietly into their mic . "Somebody come block the guy·s washroom ."

"Can you believe people used to segregate their washrooms by gender? Ka" Fizzing asked over the comms .

"Essential comms only ." Sedna scolded .

"I got one ." Gix reported . "In the church courtyard ."

"In the fucking courtyard? Ka" Sedna asked .

"I·m a stickler for the classics ." Gix retorted . "Going dark ."

Sedna·s suit filtered out background noise , sed she could still hear the sound of sucking and slurping when she tuned into Tequila·s channel .

"So , what do you do ?" Tequila asked .

"I·m a consultant ," a male voice replied . "Ahh , ahh , teeth , watch your teeth ."

"How long you been workin· here ?" They asked .

The guy stopped for a second . "What is this , Twenty Questions?"

Without missing a beat , Tequila played along . "Yeah ," they said , with a confident smile that Sedna could hear over the mic . Suck , suck . "Why not ? I give you some head , aaand you tell me a bit about yourself while i·m doin· it ." Suck , suck , suck .

The guy made an exasperated noise that sounded like he was weighing his options .

"Liiike , what·s yer favorite drink ?" Suck , suck , suck .

"Tequila Sunrise."

"Heyyy , that·s my name ."

"What are you, a whore?"

"Do i fuck with my mouth like a whore ?" Suck , suck , suck . "You gotta good job ?"

"I told you already that I was a consultant."

"Do you listen to every word that comes outta some whore·s mouth ?"

The inference went right over him . "What city are we in again ?" Tequila asked ." Then , "I travel a lot ."

"Trana . Ooh , wait , do that thing with your tongue ."

Tequila was happy to oblige .

"Got one ." Raphtalia reported over the mic .

"Good ," Sedna affirmed .

Gix·s comm flicked back on . "Heh , chickie-poo here likes the Crystal . They·ve got that good shit here , too , with all the crap in it . Not like that blue shit that comes out of the synthesizers ." Then , "She·s back . Going dark ."

Sedna could hear moaning coming from Raphtalia·s channel . "Gooood girl ," they cooed , and Sedna heard a piquant moan . "Now i want you to just relax , okay ? I got my buddy on the other side of the door , she·s gonna make sure no one comes in ."

"target Hco Matte How are things looking over there? Ka" Sedna asked .

"Good , i got the drones in the air and they·re giving me the all-clear ."

"That·s what i like to hear , friend ."

"Pssh ." Tequila chirped . "Buddy came already . Tasted decent , at least . Non-smoker . Tastes like he eats a lot of pineapple ."

Sedna laughed . "I don·t wanna know how yu know that ."

"That·s right ." Raphtalia purred . "Nice and soft . Nice and easy . Good girl ."

Sedna blushed , thankful that her friends couldn·t see the glow of her cheeks .

"Now ," Raphtalia whispered , putting on a Russian accent , a careful smile audible . "Take me to your nuclear wessels ."

"Wind·s picking up ," Matte reported . "Gotta bring the drones in . Should be all-clear from here ."

"T h e y · r e d o w n s t a i r s ." Came over the mic , Raphtalia·s catch uttered slowly .

"Goooood girl ," She crooned . "Now where·s the stairs ?"

"B a c k t h e r e . H a i r s a l o n ."

"Gooooood girl ," She reaffirmed .

"Aah aah aah ah ah ah!" The girl began moaning as Raphtalia took the decency to finish her off ."Yes! Yes! Yes! Aaahaaahaahaaahaah!" The clock shouted as she came , the reverb profile lighting up the brooms and the shelves in the small closet . "Here·s my number." She added , her voice shaky . "Call me."

-+-+-+-+-

"Well i·ll be damned ." Raphtalia swore , after blowing the hinges off of the door , plywood on one side and steel on the obverse .

It was more of a ladder than a set of stairs , descending down one of the axons that bound the grav ring to the rest of the station .

"We should be hitting Zero-G on the way down , so watch out for that ," Sedna lead .

"Ooh , Zero-G ." Fizzing enthused .

-+-+-+-+-

"And just who the fuck art thou ?" An unfamiliar voice reverberated through the massive armory hanger .

The team all looked up simultaneously . Three figures stood in front of the doorway . The - Sedna blushed - the angel standing in front with the long white hair held a scythe in their hand . One of the soldiers beside them held a compound bow while the other gripped a metal katana expertly . All three of them were wearing advanced Toha Heavy Industries body armor .

The soldier with the katana slowly edged forward . The one with the bow began creeping off to the side .

"Looks like trouble ," Sedna communicated silently using her SynTel . "That shipment good to go? Ka"

TuLi slammed the bright red button on the bottom of the terminal . There was a shoop as the steel door slammed shut on the launch tube , a loud whir , and the sound of the door opening on the outside . The force of the vacuum launched the arms shipment into space for the ship to retrieve .

There was something familiar about the way the archer crept .

"target Hco Rico" Sedna spoke over her SynTel relay . "Is that yu? Ka"

"You know how this works, Mom." The reply came back . "A job·s a job."

The warning arrow would have pinned her arm to the bulkhead if it hadn·t ricocheted off her armor .

Matte flipped up his rifle and fired a warning shot back at the foot soldier . They deflected the bullet with the broad side of their blade .

The angel smiled .

Sedna stretched , lifting her hands up over her head . "It·s gonna be like that , eh?" She spoke aloud over her mic .

Raphtalia , Gix , and Fizzing had gone back to the ship with the arms delivery . Four-to-three wasn·t as much of an advantage as she would have liked over such clearly capable foes .

An eerie silence hung over the hangar as both teams got into position . In the quiet , Sedna realized that the entire station·s engineering sections had been playing the same soothing music the whole time .

"Sa Mach Fe Crøs ." Rico said privately over a SynTel guider line .

"AaHtDé ." Sedna responded .

Rico fired the first shot . Xer cybernetically-enhanced musculature was as fast as a rifle bolt . The arrow would have skewered Tequila·s heart . Tequila was tougher than that .

"FUCK this ," Tequila shouted . "Open fire !!"

Everybody·s cybernetic senses enabled , every second was split into 214,000 frames .

Tequila·s M27 went off ,
DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM , the muzzle flash drawing flowers in the air .

Sedna could hear the ksst as each one was batted out of the air by the katana-weilding soldat . They had brought weapons that couldn·t puncture the outer hull . Smart .

TuLi vanished , becoming a dot floating in the air . Through her visor , she could see the holo-lasers extend across the room , recreating her next to the angel . Having pulled off the maneouver before , Sedna readied her cannon . TuLi·s array wouldn·t be able to project hardlight at that distance , sed the angel wouldn·t have known that . Except they did .

TuLi pulled a suddenly-materialized katana from its scabbard while Sedna·s arm cannon assembled a missile . TuLi swung , sed the angel didn·t even flinch . The blade passed right around them as they caught the missile mid-flight .

Matte readied his rifle and fired it at the angel . With an arrow , Rico shot the bullet out of mid-air .

Two hundred and fourteen thousand frames passed as the angel drew their arm in a wide horizontal arc , and then another two hundred and fourteen thousand frames , and then another two hundred and fourteen thousand frames as the missile left their hand and flew off to the side . It blew a hole in the bulkhead , revealing the reactor core in the adjacent room .

Three seconds was long enough for the soldat to cross the hanger , the katana-weilder going straight for the sniper . The path of their blade was diverted by the need to deflect Tequila·s rifle ammo . Matte executed a defensive front kick , trying to gain some space . The soldat dodged with effortless precision . Matte calibrated for the lack of impact recoil , pulling his weight from shoulder to hip , simultaneously swinging with the stock of his rifle . That one barely missed , the carbon fiber whooshing micrometers above the soldat·s craning head .

Sedna speed boosted towards the soldat , readying her shoulder for a body check . The angel collided with her paces away , and she went flying into the wall with a force that left a deep imprint in the steel bulkhead .

Without aiming , Matte fired a shot as he was readying his rifle for another blow . The bullet lodged itself into the floor where the soldat·s foot had been only moments ago .

"target Hco Tarkova Is that you? Ka" Sedna telepathed over a private channel .

If it was , they gave no indication .

"AGH!! FUCK!!" Tequila screamed as an arrow lodged itself directly through their forearm . They grabbed it by the arrowhead and pulled the fleching clean through their arm .

"You okay ?!" Sedna shouted into her mic , transmitting to Tequila·s earpiece .

"I·ve had stronger poison for breakfast ," they telepathed back .

THOK THOK THOK THOK THOK filled the air as Rico didn·t wait to see if the poison would take effect . Sedna fired a beam of plasma that vaporized the arrows and the other airlock tube on the other side of the room .

The angel swung their scythe directly at her . It bit into her armor deeper than she would have been comfortable with . Using the speed boost in her suit·s leg , she executed an offensive front kick . The angel leapt to the side to dodge , catching it in the middle of their chest . They flew up and collided with the ceiling .

Tequila raised their rifle and fired . The angel executed an air dash in mid-air . Nevertheless , arrows swatted the bullets out of mid-air .

Matte had an opening and took it . The 50-calibur Palladium bullet shattered xer helmet across the cheek , biting into the soft flesh beneath .

"FUCK !!" Xe shouted , clutching the side of xer face .

The soldat tried to push the advantage , sed Tequila·s sustained rifle fire forced them to deflect blow after blow as they kept the trigger hammered to the grip .

Sedna·s arm cannon assembled a concussion missile as she volleyed it directly at the floor amidst the collection of fighters , all of them locked far too tightly for comfort . The soldat pulled off a quintuple-backflip to the middle of the hangar . Matte·s body armor could easily handle percussive missiles , as well as the collision with the opposite bulkhead . TuLi , having been an invisible floating dot in the center of the room , materialized from nowhere with a katana of her own . The soldat , expecting the same reaction as before , readied their blade towards the rest of the crew . The light blade cut them in half from hip to ribcage .

Fuck , Sedna thought . Don·t let that be my kid .

It couldn·t have been , she thought back to herself , rationalizing . Tarkova would have known that .

Blood spilled across the hanger floor . Don·t slip , she thought to herself .

THOK THOK THOK THOK THOK , Rico angrily fired shot after shot directly at Matte . Another beam of plasma burned them out of the air , and the rest of the wall separating the reactor core from the hanger .

THOK THOK THOK THOK THOK , whatever technology Rico·s quiver was made of , it seemed to be able to pull endless arrows from some extra-dimensional space .

I need to end this , Sedna thought to herself . While the rest of the fighters were all closing in on each other , she turned , assembled a super missile , and fired it directly at the reactor core . In two hundred and fourteen thousand frames per second , she watched realization dawn on all of them as they all triangulated the errant missile . It collided with the core , the grav warp lensing the space before completely obliterating the reactor .

"UM ," the antagonist vocalized , "I·m into a good duel as much as the next human-alien hybrid , tho if we don·t stop fighting , we·re going to trigger the station·s self-destruct sequence ."

WHOOP

A klaxon went off . The lights in the room turned red .

"FIVE MINUTES TO SELF DESTRUCT ." The speaker in the corner of the room admonished .

"GRRR , FUCK!" the antagonist shouted . "Look what you·ve done! There is still so much fucking treasure on this ship!"

Taking advantage of the momentary lapse of focus , Sedna selected one of the two hundred and fourteen thousand frames and shot the angel·s codpiece clean off their armor . She wanted that angel .

"Whoop!" they imitated , the klaxons blaring among the red light , surprise in their eyes . "Time to go !!"

Tequila held down the spray on their turned backs . Rico shot them all out of the air as the angel exited , following closely behind them .

"Everybody got airtight suits? Ka" Sedna yelled .

"Clear !!" Tequila shouted .

"Clear !!" Matte shouted .

"Clear !!" TuLi shouted .

Sedna assembled another grav missile and blew a hole in the bulkhead . There was a roar as all the air in the room was vacuumed into space .

-+-+-+-+-

They stood on the bridge , holding cups of hot cocoa in their hands .

As they looked out the window of the escaping spaceship they could see the remains of the explosion-rocked station they had barely escaped from . The debris had already begun to circulate around the asteroid cluster , forming a ring of twisted metal and bloody skeletons .

Floating through space , far enough out that she could see it , a plate of metal wall rotated silently , some sort of detail visible . She gave it a quick scan . Spraypaint . The word Krasi 💜 had been tagged on it .

Somehow , she could feel that Krasi and Rico had made it out alive . Her visor down , she sipped her cocoa and watched as repair droids had already began to recycle the debris .

Somehow , she would find that angel again .
